For developers, "commit" usually means git commit.
In extreme sports like parkour and climbing, commit means something else. It refers to steeling yourself before attempting something dangerous. And here, commit carries enormous weight — because there is no such thing as a soft reset back to the state before the commit.
If I've decided to do something (if I've committed), I have to follow through without a shred of doubt. The slightest hesitation leads straight to failure.
Really, all of life's major decisions work like a commit in extreme sports. Once you've decided, you can't afford to doubt. The moment doubt creeps in, even what would have worked falls apart. I think a little narcissism actually helps here.
Whether or not you can commit on your own terms is what separates prey from predator in life. Predators commit themselves; prey get committed by force. There is no life without commitment — because danger isn't something you can dodge just by trying to avoid it.
