Back when I was a developer, I dismissed the value of consistency. That's because I was wary of settling into doing something consistently and never actually growing.
But move into other fields and the value of doing something consistently shoots up. I feel that value in exercise and in playing an instrument.
In the fitness world there's a concept called grease the groove (GTG). 1 The idea is to wear a groove: you grow a skill by doing it in small amounts, consistently. If you want to increase your pull-up count, you do sets that stop short of failure, frequently.
It has a similar feel to Distributed Practice.
Things worth doing consistently
That said, it's hard to do everything consistently. The things you want to keep up with carry a fairly large adaptation cost at the start. We often resolve to do something consistently, but successfully adopting it isn't easy. Atomic Habits does a good job explaining approaches that work well for turning something into a habit. Below is a list of the things I think are worth doing consistently.
